Unimog 404
Unimog trucks are built to be all-rounders but the 404 was built specifically for offroading. This is what makes it an excellent choice for overlanding. If you love Unimog trucks and want a budget option, then you should get one of these, especially if you want to build an expedition truck.
Mercedes Unimog 404
The Mercedes Benz Unimog 404 was manufactured from 1955 to 1980. It was produced alongside the Unimog 401 and later the Unimog 411 series. This truck was part of the Unimog S series which was different from the regular Unimog.
It was smaller than the 401 (bigger than 411) and lighter. It was built primarily for offroading purposes, unlike the traditional Mogs which were also considered to be tractors. This truck was sold for a long time and it did great numbers. There are 3 types of these vehicles on the market.
It was sold as the U82 which came in long (1955–1971) and short (1956–1980) wheelbases. There was also the U110 (1971–1980) model that was taller, less wide, and longer. It featured a larger engine; was more powerful and had a higher top speed.
You can find Mercedes Unimog 404s with one of 3 engines in the used truck market. These trucks can have one of 2 gasoline engines (2.2- and 2.8-liter). There is also a 2.2-liter diesel engine available. The Unimog 404 gearbox is a 6-speed manual.
Unimog 404s came in both Cabrio and closed cab types. They were also used for military and firetruck needs, with the latter using a double cabin configuration (Unimog 404 Doka). The 404 Unimog came in RWD with available AWD and diff locks for when you need to hit the trail.
