Unimog 407, 408, 417, and 418 Models
The 1980s saw the Unimog get a big redesign. The Unimog 407, 408, 417, and 418 trucks were introduced and they sought to take the legendary truck into the modern age, and so they did. These replaced the Unimog S and the Unimog 406. This series was divided into light- and medium-duty trucks. It had the most powerful Unimog trucks of that time. Below is all you need to know about them.
Unimog 407
The Unimog 407 was manufactured from 1988 to 1993. It was just offered with a single closed cab unless you worked for the fire department. It came with long and short wheelbases and was part of the Unimog Light Series. They got rid of the Cabrio body type and the closed cabin came as standard. Unfortunately, it didn’t sell in huge numbers and it was replaced soon.
Unimog 417
The Mercedes Unimog 417 was introduced and removed from production alongside the 407. It was categorized as a medium-duty Unimog. It was not only heavier, but it was more powerful, had more models, a greater ground clearance, and different headlamps. This is a great choice for expedition trucks.
Unimog 408
The 408 Unimog replaced the 407 and was produced from 1992 to 2001. It featured an all-new look with its bonnet and square-shaped cab. It was offered in two wheelbases (U90 and U100). You could also get it with a non-symmetrical bonnet (slanted on the driver’s side). There were two headroom options available on the truck. It also featured high-output turbocharged engines.
Unimog 418
Similar to the aforementioned models, the 408 was accompanied by the 418 Unimog. It came in two wheelbases (U110 and U140) and was even more powerful than the already mighty 408. However, its production run ended more prematurely than the 408, which entered the new millennium. The 418 Unimog went extinct in 1998 as Merc decided on a new Mog selling policy.
